East Kimberley Regional Airport Terminal Upgrade to Begin

The East Kimberley Regional Airport will begin to receive a facelift as the $10 million terminal upgrade project commences.

The Shire has received $5 million from the East Kimberley Development Package and $1.8 million from the Regional Airports Development Scheme to refurbish and upgrade existing airport facilities.

The new terminal has been designed by architects Sandover Pinder, and includes a refurbished check-in; new departure and arrival area; baggage re-claim hall; provision for chartered international flights; retail kiosk and café with kitchen; and indoor and outdoor waiting areas. Pindan Construction has been appointed as the contractors for this project with construction due to be completed in July 2011, followed by the facility fit-out.

“I compliment the Federal and State Government for their involvement in this project that is contributing to the development of essential infrastructure for our Shire,” Council President Fred Mills said.

“Construction will be a staged approach to ensure the terminal remains operational, however patience is appreciated throughout this time. The existing café has already closed but we will be installing vending machines and looking at alternatives for the café in the interim. An expression of interest will be called for the new café facilities when completion is nearing”.

Updates on the progress of this major project will be provided through SWEK News and other media.

Plans for the New Kununurra School and Community Library Well Underway

As part of the East Kimberley Development Package's Education component, a new shared joint use library is being planned for both the Kununrra Community and Kununurra District High School. The new library is a part of the overall improvements and upgrades being made at Kununurra District High School and will be located at the front corner of the school site on Coolibah Drive and Mangaloo Street.

The concept design has been developed by the project's architects with input from School, Library and Shire Staff and was recently on display at the Library during the Kimberley Writers Festival. To view the concept plan click the image below.
